My Wife And Me

How to get it right

My wife and me went on holiday. Or is it my wife and I went on holiday?

Someone was talking to my wife and I about the weather. Or is it someone was talking to my wife and me about the weather?

There is a simple way of knowing which is correct: What would you say if it was just you?

Someone was talking to I about the weather? You wouldn't say that, would you?

Me went on holiday? Ouch, no. I went on holiday.

Whatever you'd say if it was just you, that's what you say if it's two of you.

So if you'd say "someone was talking to me about the weather", then you'd say "someone was talking to my wife and me about the weather".

And if you'd say "I went on holiday", then you'd say "my wife and I went on holiday".

Simple.

Oh, and why not 'I and my wife' or 'me and my wife'? Well, it's less self-centred to put your wife first, don't you think?

So forget about subjects, objects, verbs and all that and remember the simple rule: what would you say if it was just you.
